Saw a 40-year-old maple come down last week in Portland

Honestly, it got me thinking about how much the gear has changed since I started 15 years ago. We used to climb everything with just a flip line and a handsaw, now I see guys with mechanical ascenders and full saddle setups. Last month I watched a crew take out a big silver maple in under 3 hours with a crane and a bucket truck. Has anyone else felt like the old school methods are getting lost in all this new tech?

and honestly, I feel the same way lol. I remember climbing a huge oak back in 2009 with nothing but a hand saw and steel core flip line, took me almost 5 hours just to piece it down. Watched a crew with a spider lift zip through a tree last spring in like 45 minutes and I couldn't help but feel a little nostalgic for the old hustle.

That spider lift story from @milam42 actually made me reconsider my whole stance on old vs new gear though.

Read an arborist blog saying the old way built more skill.
