Question about using a stump grinder on a Bradford pear

Tried grinding a 24-inch stump yesterday and the machine kept bouncing off the roots instead of cutting. I think the shallow root system on these trees makes it a different job. Anyone have a better method for these?

Ugh, those roots are the worst. I usually take an axe and hack at the bigger ones first to break them up. Makes the grinder actually bite in.
