Honestly, a guy at the supply yard said he never uses a climbing line over 3 years old, no matter what it looks like

Does he also trade in his car every time the warranty runs out? That's a pretty expensive way to live, unless he's getting paid to test new ropes every season.

The thing about ropes is they're a wear item, not a warranty thing. A lot of climbers retire them after a hard fall or visible damage, not just time. It's more like changing your tires when the tread is gone, not trading in a car.

Ever notice how a rope feels different after a core shot? I keep my last retired one in the garage to practice knot tying and to show new climbers what wear looks like. It's a good visual for when to swap, rowanp15, more about safety than a calendar.
