Found out last week that most oaks produce acorns on a 2-3 year cycle, not yearly

I was looking into why one of my client's oaks hasn't dropped much the last two falls. Turns out it's called masting and oaks sync up on purpose. I read a study from the US Forest Service that said this helps them overwhelm squirrels so some acorns survive to become trees. Has anyone else noticed a big drop year in their area?

Yeah that's mostly right but oaks don't really sync up on purpose. They just happen to all hit the same lean years because of weather patterns and how much energy the tree has stored up. The effect on squirrels is real though.
