Appreciation post: the old timer who taught me about root flare at a job in Boise

Honestly, I was digging around a big oak last summer and this retired arborist walks over and says 'you're burying the tree, son.' He showed me how to expose the root flare properly and explained why so many oaks rot out early. That one tip saved me from making the same mistake on like 10 jobs since. Has anyone else had a random stranger change the way you work?

The root flare thing gets brought up a lot but honestly most trees do fine even if you plant them a bit deep. Like are we really pretending every oak in the suburbs is on the verge of rot because of an extra inch of dirt? It's good advice sure, but let's not act like it's this life-or-death secret that only a wise old sage could reveal.

Does nobody consider that soil type and drainage matter way more than a precise planting depth?

This is just how people are with any basic advice that gets repeated enough. Like how everyone acts like you have to season a cast iron skillet exactly right or it's ruined, but in reality people have been cooking on them for centuries with way less fuss. It's the same pattern with lawn care or car maintenance - take a simple tip, turn it into a sacred ritual, and suddenly anyone who doesn't follow it to the letter is wrong. People need things to feel complicated so they can feel smart for knowing the "right" way.
