A retired logger in Eugene showed me how to read a tree's lean

Last fall I was taking down a big maple near a fence line and a retired logger walking by stopped to watch. He pointed at the trunk and said 'the roots will tell you where it wants to go' and showed me how the soil cracks on one side. I spent the next 20 minutes checking root plates on every tree around. Anyone else had an old timer drop a piece of wisdom like that on a random job?
