A guy at a nursery in Austin told me to never use wood chips around young oaks, but my boss swears by it. Who's right?

Some of those guys get weirdly religious about mulch. They can suck nitrogen from the soil as they break down. Just add a bit of fertilizer when you use them and you'll be fine.
