Went to a supply house in Cleveland last week and something felt off about their parts inventory

I stopped by Great Lakes Appliance Parts on Tuesday to pick up a compressor for a 2018 Whirlpool fridge. The guy behind the counter had no idea what model number I was talking about and spent 15 minutes digging through bins. Makes me wonder if other shops are getting sloppy with their stock management or if I just hit a bad day.

Man, that sounds like a pattern I've been noticing too. Seems like a lot of local supply places are relying on old paper lists or just winging it instead of having their inventory organized properly. Your mileage may vary but I've had way better luck calling ahead to smaller shops that actually take the time to look things up before you drive over.

Read a piece recently that talked about how a lot of these places just never moved past the "good old days" of handwritten logs and memory. @the_leo is totally right that the smaller shops often have way better info because they're still small enough to keep track of things in their head. Honestly, I think a lot of the bigger supply yards got lazy and just expect you to walk around and figure it out yourself. Tbh it's a huge waste of gas and time when you show up and they tell you it's in a different warehouse or backordered. Ngl it's getting ridiculous how many places are running on outdated systems in 2024. I'd rather drive 30 minutes to a shop that answers my call honestly than waste an hour at a place that just guesses.
