Walked into a repair call in Phoenix last week and the dryer vent was just stuffed full of lint

The homeowner said they hadn't cleaned it in 3 years and it was so packed the dryer was taking 4 hours per load. Has anyone else run into vents that bad or am I just lucky?

Oh wow, I gotta say that sounds pretty normal to me actually. People make such a big deal about dryer vents but most folks I know have never cleaned theirs and their dryers work fine for years. Maybe the real problem here is the dryer itself or how they're using it, not just some lint. Those horror stories about fires are way overblown too, I've seen vents caked up worse than that and nothing ever happened. If it really took 4 hours per load there's probably something else wrong with the machine.

I actually read this thing from a fire safety group a while back that said dryers cause like 15,000 house fires a year in the US alone. Not saying that's every clogged vent or anything, but it stuck with me because that number is way higher than I expected. @finley_walker57 you might be right that some people get lucky, but I've also heard from repair guys who say they pull out nests of lint that look like a small animal crawled in there. The 4 hour thing does sound extreme though, maybe they got a combo of a long vent run and a weak motor or something.

Yeah honestly @finley_walker57 I'm not sure that's normal either.
