Rant: A guy in Boise handed me his dead dryer and a thank you card his kid drew
This was about 5 months back. His name was Ray. He runs a little barber spot off State Street and I swapped the thermal fuse in his Whirlpool in maybe 20 minutes. Charged him $85 for the part and the call.
He paid, then dug in his apron and pulled out a folded card. His daughter is 7 and she drew me as a guy holding a giant wrench with a cape on. He said she asked what a repair guy looks like so she could make it right.
The card is still taped inside my van door next to the fusebox diagram. Some days when a job drags or a landlord yells about a $200 bill, I look at that crayon cape and I'm good.
Anybody else keep stuff customers give you in the truck? Curious what the weirdest one is.

That card works different than a tip because it messes with your head in a good way. Cash gets spent and forgot by Tuesday, but a kid's drawing hangs there and turns into a mirror. You start asking yourself if you were the guy she thinks shows up to fix things, and weirdly you try harder to be him. The kids' stuff is the heavy one. Adults hand you beer or gift cards and it's gone, but a 7 year old's crayon cape follows you around for months.

Something like this happened to my uncle. He drove a tow truck for years and some lady he helped on the highway sent his shop a thank you card with a little sketch of his truck inside. He kept it taped to the dash for like a decade. When he finally sold that truck he took the card out real careful and put it in his toolbox. Said he couldn't toss it, felt wrong. Weird how a five minute crayon drawing outlasts a whole career.
