PSA: I used to think those cheap universal fridge thermostats were fine for a quick fix.
I was talking to a retired repair guy named Frank at the supply house in Spokane last week. He told me he's seen at least three compressors burn out this year because those generic stats don't cycle right, letting the unit run too long. That hit different coming from someone who's been doing this since the 80s. Has anyone else had a compressor fail shortly after installing a non-OEM thermostat?

Frank in Spokane just gave us the three most expensive reasons to skip the cheap fix, didn't he?

Yeah, Frank basically just handed out a free lesson in how a twenty dollar part can turn into a thousand dollar problem. I mean, you save a few bucks up front just to buy a whole new fridge later. Classic case of being penny wise and pound foolish, as my grandad would say. Those stats are cheap for a reason, they just don't have the right cut in and cut out points.
