Had to choose between a used Speed Queen and a new LG washer for a customer
Last week I had a customer in Phoenix with a tight budget, around $500. I found a 5-year-old Speed Queen on Craigslist for $400 and a brand new LG top loader on sale for $480. I pushed them toward the Speed Queen since those things last forever, but they went with the LG for the warranty. Two days later the LG threw an error code about the lid lock, and I had to go back and fix a loose wire. Should I just let people pick what they want next time?

Bet on the warranty every time and let them learn.

That whole mindset applies to way more than just electronics or car repairs. I've noticed people treat return policies at grocery stores the same way. They buy a huge bag of avocados, eat two, let the rest rot, then try to return the half-eaten bag. The store takes the loss because they have to keep the policy consistent. It's like a tax on being unprepared, and the company just bakes it into the price for everyone else. So yeah, let them learn the hard way, but don't act surprised when the price goes up for the rest of us who pay attention.
