Had an old timer show me a trick on a washing machine in Detroit

Guy I was shadowing in 2019 told me to listen for the hum before touching anything. Said the motor bearing sings a different note when it's about to go. You ever catch stuff by ear before opening it up?

And that's solid advice, honestly. The hum thing works on dryers too. I've learned to put my hand on the top of the machine while it's running, just lightly. You can feel a weird vibration pattern when a drum bearing is starting to wear out. Kinda like a rough pulse instead of a smooth buzz.

Yeah you can literally feel a bad bearing like a skipping heartbeat through the metal, it's wild how sensitive your hand gets.
