Got called out for my old school ice maker diagnosis method

A guy at a supply house in Phoenix told me I was wasting time checking the fill tube first on every call. He said 80 percent of the time it's the water inlet valve, and I should start there. I argued with him for a minute, but tried it his way on the next three jobs. All three were the valve. Saved me about 15 minutes each visit. I feel a bit dumb for sticking to my routine for so long. Anyone else have a basic step they skip now that saves a ton of time?

Honestly I read a forum post a while back about a tech who always checked the thermistor first on no-cool calls. He said he wasted years checking caps and fans when, in his area, it was that stupid little sensor like 70% of the time. Changed his whole process. Makes you wonder what other simple steps we're all overthinking.

My old boss in Tampa swore by checking the door switch first on every washer that wouldn't spin. I fought him on it for months until I tracked my own calls and he was right about 60% of the time. Now it's my first step.

My old Denver mentor skipped the board, checked the door latch first.
