Sub or Dub for slice-of-life anime: which one loses the emotion?
Three years ago I watched 'Barakamon' dubbed first and felt the humor hit better, but last week I tried the subbed version and the vocal tones felt more real during the sad parts. Do subtitles give you a more authentic emotional connection to the characters, or does dubbing let you focus on the animation without reading?

Oh, totally agree! I had the same thing with 'Flying Witch' - subs just hit different.

Yeah, "the vocal tones feel more real during the sad parts" is exactly why I stick with subs even if I miss some animation. Honestly though, I just like reading the dramatic sighs in lowercase letters it feels more honest. Do you find yourself getting distracted by text on screen during the funny moments?
