Overheard someone at a con arguing that One Piece filler is actually good, and it got me thinking

I was waiting in line for a panel at Anime Expo last weekend and heard two guys going back and forth about filler arcs. One of them said the G-8 arc in One Piece is better than most canon arcs because of how it handles the crew sneaking around. It made me realize that maybe filler isn't always bad, especially when it gives side characters more screen time. Has anyone else found a filler arc they actually enjoyed more than the main story?

G-8 is the one filler arc everyone agrees is good, you know the canon arcs don't really have much to worry about.

You know what, you're spot on about G-8. My buddy Dave, who's way deeper into One Piece than me, he actually watched G-8 first by accident when he was catching up. Didn't realize it was filler until way later, and he was genuinely bummed when the story moved on from that arc. Said the comedy and the way they kept the whole setting feeling like a real military base was just so tight. It's funny, because most filler feels like a time waster, like the show just hit a roadblock. But G-8 actually feels like it belongs, you know? It doesn't break the pacing or make the strawhats act all weird. So yeah, no wonder everyone points to that one as the exception. If only all filler could be that good, we wouldn't have half the complaints about the anime's pacing.
