My opinion on anime dubs flipped after a buddy made me watch 20 minutes in each language back to back
Back in 2019 I was the guy who would not touch a dub with a 10 foot pole. Subs only, end of story. Then my buddy Dave sat me down and made me watch the same episode of Cowboy Bebop twice, once with subs and once with the English cast. The difference in the English version was honestly not what I expected. The dub actors matched the mouth flaps and the tone felt right, not stiff like I remembered from the 90s stuff. What really got me was the little jokes and wordplay actually landing instead of me pausing to read notes. So now I watch both and pick whichever one fits the show's vibe. I am not saying every dub is great, some still sound like a high school play. Has anyone else done that side by side test and changed their mind, or am I just late to the party?
