My cousin's advice about skipping filler arcs saved my watchlist

My cousin in San Diego told me to skip episodes 7 through 11 of that long running shonen, said they were pure filler and I'd miss nothing. I followed his word and jumped ahead, but those episodes actually had a crucial backstory for a side character who shows up later in season 2. I was totally lost during the tournament arc and had to backtrack after 3 episodes of confusion. Now I check episode guides myself, but I don't blame him, he watches everything at 1.5x speed anyway. Anyone else ever get burned by a friend's shortcut that wasn't one?

1.5x speed on everything? That explains so much, that guy is basically speedrunning his own life and probably missed half the show himself. You got lucky it was just a side character backstory, I once skipped what a friend called a "filler beach episode" and it turned out to be the setup for the entire next season's villain. Trusting someone else's episode list feels like gambling with your own free time, now I just read the wiki before I skip anything.
