Is subbed actually better than dubbed or is that just gatekeeping?

I watched Akira subbed for years because everyone online said it's the only way. Then last month I finally tried the dub from the 2001 Pioneer release and honestly I liked it more. The voice acting felt more natural to me. But I know people will say I'm wrong for that. Has anyone else switched sides on this debate after actually giving both a fair shot?

Oh man, here's something I don't see people talk about enough - sometimes the quality of the dub itself matters way more than sub vs dub as a concept. Like, older dubs from the 80s and 90s were often rushed and terrible, but modern dubs or specific releases like the Pioneer Akira version had actual directors and better budgets behind them. So it's not really about gatekeeping, it's more that people are comparing bad dubs from 30 years ago to good subs and acting like that's the universal standard. I've totally flipped on this for certain shows too, especially comedies where timing and delivery can make or break a joke in your own language.

Totally agree @jade618 but does having a good budget automatically make a dub better than the sub?
