I finally got my friend to watch the first episode of Monster
He texted me 'okay you were right' after 40 minutes, which never happens. Anyone have a good second anime to suggest for someone who liked that slow-burn start?

Oh man, that's a great sign. Monster is such a specific vibe. If they liked that slow build, you gotta stick with something that has a similar mood. Try "Paranoia Agent." It's another one by Satoshi Kon, and it starts with this weird, creeping mystery that pulls you in. It's less about a single killer and more about this feeling of dread spreading through a whole city. The pace is perfect for someone who just got hooked on Monster's style.

my friend amy once tried to watch paranoia agent right after finishing death note and she got so confused she thought the little rollerblading guy was L in a costume lol. i get why ppl push it but monster and pa is like comparing a documentary to a fever dream. pluto is actually a way better pick for that grounded detective feel even with the robot stuff. i watched the first two eps of pluto and it had that same quiet tension where u just know something bad is coming but u dont know what yet. plus the animation in pluto is gorgeous like seriously some of the best i've seen in years.

Paranoia Agent is a solid show, but the jump from Monster feels too big. Monster is grounded in real world tension, while Paranoia Agent gets surreal fast. For that slow burn crime vibe, I'd point them toward "Pluto" on Netflix first. It's a newer series with a similar pace and moral questions, just in a sci-fi setting. It keeps that feeling of a mystery unfolding piece by piece.
