Heard a guy at the con say 'anime peaked in the 90s' and I gotta disagree
This was at Anime NYC last weekend, and this dude was going on about how every new show is just isekai trash. He specifically said 'nothing has topped Cowboy Bebop or Evangelion'. I think that's a lazy take. Shows like Spy x Family and Chainsaw Man are pulling in huge numbers for a reason, and the animation quality now is insane. We're getting way more variety in stories now, not less. What's a recent anime you think proves the medium is still getting better?

Hard agree, that take is so tired. Just finished Frieren and it's maybe the best fantasy story I've ever seen, animated or not. The medium is absolutely still growing.

Frieren had me crying over a 28 year old potato, so yeah, the medium's doing fine lol.

Honestly what gets me is how Frieren uses quiet moments to build its world. Most fantasy stuff is all about the next big fight or magic spell, but this show makes you care about the years in between. That kind of storytelling feels new, even for books. Makes you wonder what else animation could do if more people took those kinds of quiet risks.
