DAE get frustrated when a character's backstory gets retconned halfway through a show?

I was watching this new mecha series last week and they built up the MC as this orphan with a tragic past, then episode 10 dropped and suddenly he's the secret son of the main villain with a whole different childhood. It completely broke my suspension of disbelief and I almost dropped the show. Has anyone else run into a retcon that ruined an otherwise solid anime for you?

My friend was really into that magical girl show last season where the cute mascot turned out to be evil. She said the first twelve episodes built up this whole lore about the mascot being a guardian spirit protecting the girls, then suddenly it was like "hey, I've been manipulating you this whole time for my own selfish reasons." She was so mad she quit watching and now every time I bring up the show she just sighs real loud and changes the subject.

@willow_anderson85 oh man, that twist sounds brutal. Those bait and switch shows can really mess with you. I get why your friend checked out though, twelve episodes is a lot of invested time just to get slapped in the face like that. Did she ever try going back to it or is that bridge totally burned now?
