Appreciation post: Gintama's serious arcs hit different when you stop treating the comedy as filler
I used to skip ahead to the Benizakura arc on rewatches because I thought the gag episodes were just padding. Then around episode 40 something clicked: the comedy is not filler, it is the setup. The reason the drama lands so hard is because you watched these idiots be idiots for 30 episodes first.
My friend argued the opposite, said a real story should not need 100 episodes of jokes to earn its emotional payoff. I get that. But the jokes are what make the payoff hurt.
Does the comedy-first structure work for you, or do you think a show should get to the point faster?
