Tried running alarm wires through existing HVAC ducts to save time on a big house in Austin. Took me twice as long dealing with insulation and sharp edges.

pulling a snake through a mattress" is exactly right, I heard of some guy who just gave up and cut a small access hole in the drywall to thread it through. Insulation and sharp edges are a rough combo.

Man, did you at least think about using a fish tape with a glow rod before you started wrestling with those ducts? I had to do a similar thing once in a retro job and the insulation was so packed it felt like I was trying to pull a snake through a mattress. What kind of wire did you end up using? Because standard cat6 or alarm cable with that stiff jacket seems like a nightmare against those sharp metal edges.
