TIL a faulty transformer can mimic a dead panel for days

Last Tuesday I got a call from a customer in Dayton saying their keypad was dead, no lights at all. I checked the panel first and swapped the battery, still nothing. After three trips I finally put my meter on the transformer and it was putting out 8 volts instead of 16.5. That weak feed kept the panel brain alive but killed all the keypads. Has anyone else chased a ghost like that and ended up blaming the wrong part first?
