PSA: Bought a cheap cable toner that cost me half a day's work

Honestly, I grabbed a $40 cable toner from a discount site for a basic residential job last month. Tbh, the thing kept giving false positives on a short run of 22/4, making me think I had a break in the middle of a wall. Ngl, I spent about 4 hours re-pulling a perfectly good wire before I tested with my old Fluke unit and found nothing wrong. That was basically $300 in lost billable time for a simple fault check. Has anyone else had a nightmare with a specific off-brand tester they thought would save a few bucks?

Ugh, that's the cheap tool tax right there.

Yeah exactly, it's like a hidden fee for trying to save money up front. I mean, you buy the cheap version, it breaks or just doesn't work right, and then you have to go buy the good one anyway. So you end up paying twice. I see it with so much stuff now, not just tools. It feels like a trap you have to learn the hard way.
