I mean, I skipped testing the backup battery and the alarm died during a blackout.

Yikes, I gotta disagree on skipping the test. Honestly, those backup batteries can go bad just sitting there, even if they're new. I make it a point to check mine with the test button every month, it takes two seconds. You never really know if it'll work until you try it.

Totally agree with @keving93! I found a brand new one in the box at my mom's house that was totally dead, no warning beeps or anything. It's crazy how they can just die on the shelf. That monthly button press is the only real way to know.
