Used to torque gear strut bolts by feel for 6 years, now I use a $40 digital wrench and I'm never going back
For years I snugged gear strut bolts down with a breaker bar and called it good if the cotter pin lined up. Last March a DPE at a field in Wichita flagged one during a checkride prep and I nearly lost the signoff. Turns out my "feel" was running about 22 percent over spec on the nose gear. I picked up a digital torque wrench and now every strut bolt gets logged with the number in the squawk sheet. Takes an extra 90 seconds per bolt and I sleep way better. What other jobs are you all still doing by feel that should have a number attached?
