That magnetic drain plug almost cost me an engine tear down
Last Thursday I pulled an oil filter on a leased 737 at MRO in Phoenix and found a chunk of gear tooth, looked like about the size of a pencil eraser. The plug had a magnet but the piece was aluminum, so it floated right past it into the sump screen. I stopped the return to service and flagged the engine log, then the lead ordered a borescope through the oil scavenge port. Turns out the accessory gearbox bearing cage was shedding, we caught it before it went through the main gear train. Has anyone else seen aluminum debris slip past a magnetic plug on the CFM56, or is this a freak one off?
