Stumbled on a stat about engine vibration limits that really surprised me

Honestly, I was flipping through the maintenance manual for a CFM56-5B last week and found out that vibration limits for the N1 fan can be as low as 1.0 mils at certain speeds. I always just knew it was something small, but seeing it in black and white at 0.001 inches made me realize how precise we really have to be. Has anyone else found a spec that just seemed way tighter than you thought?

Hang on, did you say 1.0 mils? That's basically a hair width, isn't it? I mean, I knew airplane parts were tight, but that's down to watching a fan blade wobble less than a thousandth of an inch. That feels like it's measuring the air itself more than the metal. What happens if you sneeze near that engine, does it trip a vibration alarm? I'd be scared to even breathe on it.

That 1.0 mils number is honestly crazy to think about. I've seen those engines up close and they're not small things, so the idea that we're measuring movement down to 0.001 inches is wild. You're right about the hair width comparison, I've heard that before and it still blows my mind. I remember watching a mechanic once check a vibration reading on a test stand and he told me the whole thing was basically riding on a film of oil thinner than a piece of paper. Makes you wonder how anything even stays together at those tolerances. I'd be holding my breath the whole time too.
