Had a chat with a pilot about torque wrenches that made me laugh

He asked me why we always click them twice. Said he'd been watching for years. Told him it's just how you're taught. He goes, 'So it's like a ritual, not a rule?' Made me think. Been doing it for 15 years without question. Anyone else ever get asked something that made you pause?

...and @jesse_harris is right, that pilot really did turn it into a whole thing you can't unsee. I was standing in the shop after reading this, staring at my torque wrench like it was some kind of alien tool. The guy I work with, Mike, has been clicking his twice for 23 years and when I asked him why, he just shrugged and said "that's what the old timers showed me." Its crazy how we just pass stuff down without ever stopping to question if theres a real reason behind it. Makes me wonder what else I do on autopilot that nobody ever asked about.

Funny how the simplest questions hit hardest. Makes you wonder what other habits are just muscle memory with no real reason. That pilot nailed it, turning a daily action into a philosophy question. Bet half the shop is gonna second guess their next click now.

Actually pilots do that to check the plane's trim before takeoff. It's a real safety thing, not just muscle memory.
