Chose the cheap borescope over sending the engine out, and it paid off
Had a Lycoming O-320 in a 172 that was making metal, and I had two calls to make: pull the cylinder and ship it to a shop in Tulsa for $1,800, or buy a $220 USB borescope off Amazon and look myself first. I went with the borescope, and 20 minutes later I was staring at a scored cylinder wall on the number 3 jug. Sent photos to the owner, he approved the top overhaul, and I saved him close to two grand on shipping and teardown fees. Anyone else doing their own borescope work before farming it out, or am I the only one who bought a cheap camera instead of trusting someone else's eyeballs?
