Check the firewall seal before you sign off that annual

Had a Cessna 172 come through last month with a cracked firewall seal that the previous guy signed off three times in a row, and the pilot almost filed a squawk on it after a cold start. A good flashlight and two minutes under the cowl caught it, so why are we rushing this basic step? Any of you ever caught something this small that turned into a big deal later?
