An old timer at the hangar in Tulsa told me 'the book is a guide, not a god' after I spent six hours chasing a phantom hydraulic leak.

That old timer is giving dangerous advice. The book exists because people died figuring out the right way to do things. Following it exactly is what keeps you from making a simple problem into a catastrophic one.

My buddy Mike was rewiring his basement last year and skipped the code about junction box covers. He said it was just a temporary splice. Two weeks later a short circuit started a small fire behind his drywall. That's exactly what @ericjackson is talking about. Those rules seem annoying until you realize they're written in ashes. Mike's house almost burned down over a two dollar piece of plastic.
