Hot take: My air fryer almost caught fire making frozen fries

I was in my kitchen in Phoenix trying to cook a full bag of store brand fries, and they piled up and touched the heating element. I heard a loud pop and saw smoke, so I unplugged the unit right away and let it cool for a full day. Has anyone else had food touch the top coil, and what's the safest way to cook a big batch?

Was it really that close to a fire?

Man, my air fryer basically turns into a science experiment every time I use it. I'm so bad at shaking the basket that I end up with one side burnt and the other frozen. Maybe I should just stick to microwave meals.

Yikes, that sounds legit scary! Makes me think of the time my old toaster oven started sparking because a piece of cheese dripped down. @barnes.kai, it can get real close real fast with those heating coils, you know? Honestly, I just don't trust small appliances anymore after stuff like that happens. Maybe we all just need to stand there and watch our food like a hawk every single time.
