Visited a data center in Austin and the cooling setup blew my mind
Last month I got a tour of a small colocation facility off Research Boulevard, and I was not ready for how much thought goes into keeping the racks cool. They were using a liquid cooling loop that ran behind the server racks, not just big AC units blowing air everywhere. The guy showing us around said it cut their power bill by roughly 30 percent compared to their old setup, and the noise was way lower too. It made me wonder if we are all underestimating how fast AI workloads will push regular air cooling to its limit. I have been reading about immersion cooling for a while, but seeing the real pipes and pumps made it click. Has anyone else seen a modern cooling setup that made them rethink their own server room plans, or is it still overkill for most of us?
