Why does nobody talk about the founder who admits they are bad at managing people?

I had coffee with another agency owner last week in Austin. She straight up told me she runs a 15 person shop but has no idea how to give feedback without making people cry. She said 'I just hide in my office and hope they figure it out.' That stuck with me because I think a lot of us are faking it on the people side. Has anyone else had a founder actually admit they are weak at managing their team?

Happens all the time across the board, not just in business. Walk into any coffee shop and you'll see people nodding along to things they don't fully get - whether it's managing a team or just pretending to know the difference between a latte and a cappuccino (which took me way too long to figure out). We're all just kind of winging it and hoping nobody asks too many questions.

Is it possible she's actually good at managing if her team's still sticking around through all that?

Feel for her honestly. Having a team that stays usually means she's doing something right, even if the management style looks rough from the outside. Gotta give credit where it's due if people are choosing to stick around.
