We fired a client over a $400 retainer and I still think it was right
Overheard someone at a Denver meetup say you should never drop a paying account, even the tiny ones, but last month we cut a $400/month gig that ate 8 hours a week and it freed us to land a $2,500 project. Sometimes the math on what a small client costs in stress is bigger than the invoice. Has anyone else walked away from a small fee and watched everything else improve?

We cut a $300 retainer that was taking up way too much of our week and it was like a weight lifted. The client kept asking for extra stuff that wasn't in the scope, and we were constantly re-explaining things. Within a month we picked up two better clients who actually respected our time. Small fees can be the most draining ones if they come with big demands.
