I finally stopped asking clients for 5-year plans
Every agency owner I meet swears by getting the client's 5 year vision before starting work. I used to do that too until last quarter when a client's "massive expansion" turned into a budget freeze three months later. Their 5 year plan was pure wishful thinking, not a roadmap. Now I ask for 6 month goals and keep projects scoped tight. Why do we keep pretending long term plans mean anything in this economy?

My last 5 year plan was that I'd finally organize my inbox by then. Spoiler alert: its still a disaster and I have 14,000 unread emails. Your clients are probably the same way, just with bigger dollar signs attached to their dreams. 6 month goals are way more honest, less painful when reality hits.
