Hot take: hourly billing vs value pricing for design projects

I spent 3 years billing by the hour until a client said "you work too fast, can you slow down?" That's when I knew the model was broken. Which side are you on and why?

Strictly value pricing changed everything for me after a similar wake up call. Hourly billing punishes you for being good at your job, which is backwards. I started charging a flat rate based on the outcome the client wanted, not the time it took. Some projects paid really well for just a few hours work, but that's because my experience made me fast. The trick is getting comfortable with the numbers and not second guessing yourself when a job goes quick. Clients actually respect you more when you talk about results instead of hours.
