That referral clause I ignored for 2 years just cost me $14k
Had a client in Phoenix sign a contract I wrote back in 2022. No referral clause because I thought it would scare people off. Last month they sent me three leads who all signed, total $14k in new work. Two of those leads were from a friend of the owner, not even the owner himself. I found out the friend expected a finder's fee and got upset when I said I don't do that. Now I have to either pay him out of pocket or burn the relationship. I spent all weekend rewriting my contract template with a 10% referral clause for anyone who gets me a signed deal. Anyone else skip this and regret it later? How do you handle friends of clients who expect a cut without a written agreement?
