A client fired us on a Tuesday over a report I built wrong, and it saved our whole quarter
Last month I was sitting in a Panera in Columbus at 7am, finishing a monthly report for our biggest client, a $12k/month account. I pulled the numbers from the wrong date range, so the report showed their leads dropped 40% when they actually went up 12%. I sent it without checking twice because I was late for my kid's school thing. The client called my partner at 4pm that Tuesday and said they were done, effective immediately. I drove to their office the next morning with the corrected numbers printed on paper, and admitted I messed up the pull. Their marketing director stared at me for a second and said "we almost left last year too, over slow replies, not bad numbers." That line hit me harder than the firing. We kept them, but I spent the next two weeks rewriting our whole QA flow so no report goes out without a second set of eyes. Anyone else ever lose or nearly lose a client over a dumb internal mistake, and did you change your process or just apologize harder?
